The companies behind a huge aluminum plant project in Inola say they’re holding an open house on Thursday where the public can learn more about it.

If it gets build, the project, dubbed Oklahoma Primary Aluminum, is expected to double the U.S. supply of aluminum and could turn Oklahoma into a major manufacturing hub for industries that rely on aluminum, creating thousands of local jobs.

Supporters also say it would make the U.S. less reliant on other, sometimes adversarial nations for its aluminum supply.

But the plan has some residents worried about the environmental impact, especially on farmland.

It’s even prompted one opposition group called ‘Stop the Inola Smelter.’

The public meeting is this Thursday night from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Inola Public Schools Fine Arts Center at 801 E. Commercial St. in Inola.
