OSBE approves revised Oklahoma Academic Standards for Social Studies

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma State Board of Education (OSBE) has approved the revised version of the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Social Studies.

The revised standards were originally put together during the 2024-2025 school year under the supervision of former State Superintendent Ryan Walters.

However, the original standards were struck down by the Oklahoma Supreme Court in Dec. 2025 with the court ruling Walters had violated the Oklahoma Open Meeting Act.

Since the Supreme Court ruled the standards had been unlawfully approved, they were declared invalid and could not be enforced.

State Superintendent Lindel Fields gave the following statement about the OSBE’s approval of the revised standards:

“I’m grateful for the hard work of the committee of experts who crafted the standards, as well as to the board for their diligence and dedication. The approved standards include input from the public and demonstrate the instructional soundness necessary for improving education in Oklahoma.”

The revised standards lack some of the most controversial aspects of the previous standards, with Fields’ office confirming the new standards don’t include the controversial stances on the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 presidential election.

The standards will now be submitted to the legislature for approval.
