TULSA, Okla. — The westbound lanes of East 51st Street South near South Lewis Avenue are closed as authorities respond to a fatal semi rollover crash.
According to police, an SUV was driving westbound on 51st Street and was approaching the on-ramp to I-44 eastbound, located near South Atlanta Avenue.
Authorities said witnesses reported the SUV was driving at a high rate of speed as it neared the on-ramp.
A fuel truck heading eastbound on 51st Street attempted to make a left turn onto the I-44 eastbound on-ramp.
Authorities said they believe the semi had a protected light as it made the turn, but haven’t completely confirmed that information at this early stage.
Police said the SUV went through the intersection and hit the rear axle of the fuel truck, which knocked the semi onto its side.
The SUV then spun out of control before coming to a rest in the road.
Police said authorities quickly responded to the scene and took the driver of the SUV to the hospital where they later passed away from the injuries they received in the crash.
