OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) is looking for nominees to join its newly launched committee.
OSSAA’s newest committee will be focused on reviewing the organization’s 24 rules.
OSSAA is currently accepting nominations from all 482 member schools — from principals to athletic directors to superintendents.
Member schools are encouraged to nominate committee members. The final members will be announced within the next few weeks.
This new committee will evaluate the organizations’ current set of rules. They will meet monthly from May through December and will propose changes to the OSSAA Board of Directors.
OSSAA will announce proposed rule changes after each meeting and the board will put the changes to a referendum vote, if elevated, and member schools will be able to vote.
OSSAA adopts new rules on an “as-needed” basis. Some of the organization’s rules date back to the 1960s.
The current way OSSAA reviews rules is annually and the reviews focus on clarity, changes in activities, or national safety recommendations. A small group of school administrators is usually appointed by the board to conduct a review of the OSSAA constitution, rules, and policies every five years.
“This is no small task in a state with such a diverse range of schools,” said David Jackson, Executive Director of OSSAA. “We know this group of people who work with students every day will be able to truly understand the impact of these rules, find gaps and improve them for the betterment of our students and teams.”
