CLEVELAND COUNTY, Okla. — New charges have been filed against Julius Jones — the man whose death sentence was commuted — nearly two years after the alleged crime.

Jones is accused of trying to smuggle contraband into the Joseph Harp Correctional Center in Lexington in August 2024.

During a search, investigators say they found a phone believed to belong to Jones and allege he gave specific instructons to a runner, even sending a Google Maps pin for a drop location.

Authorities say packages contained cell phones, marijuana, tobacco, and other items.

According to court records, Jones faces multiple felony charges, including bringing contraband into a penal institution and conspiracy.

Jones was sentenced to death after being convicted of the 1999 murder of Edmond businessman Paul Howell, but Governor Kevin Stitt commuted his sentence in 2021. He is now serving life in prison without the possibility of parole.
