On April 7, former Pauls Valley student Victor Hawkins entered the school with o loaded semi-automatic pistols. Hawkins attempted to shoot a student sitting in the foyer, but the gun malfunctioned, according to authorities.

He then fired the gun, but did not aim it at anyone. Moore ran from his office following the first shot to confront Hawkins. Police said during this, he was shot in the leg.

Moore wrestled Hawkins until he was able to disarm him.

Hawkins was charged with one count of shooting with intent to kill and two counts of pointing a firearm, and a misdemeanor gun charge.

Hawkins, according to police, said his plan was to kill students, faculty, and then himself.

No students were injured and Moore, at the time of the shooting, was said to be in stable condition.

Moore was present at the school dance and walked to receive his crown. Students erupted in loud cheers and applause as he did so.
