OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma House of Representatives has unanimously approved legislation that would require new data centers to generate their own electricity.

House Bill 2992 received bipartisan support in the chamber and now advances to the state Senate for consideration.

The measure would mandate that any newly built data center supply its own power through on-site generation. Supporters say the requirement is intended to reduce strain on the state’s existing power grid as demand for large-scale data facilities grows.

In addition to energy requirements, the bill would increase transparency around land purchases tied to data center development. Under the proposal, developers would be required to disclose planned land acquisitions to county commissioners, the Oklahoma Corporation Commission and adjacent property owners at least 60 days before a sale is finalized.

The bill must pass the state Senate before it can be sent to the governor’s desk for final approval.
