TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa Police responded to a stabbing at the Tulsa Farmer’s Market on Saturday morning.
According to organizers of the market, one person was injured after being attacked by a “homemade weapon during what appeared to be a mental health crisis.”
Tulsa Police said the incident took place around 7:39 a.m. The caller told TPD, “multiple people were holding down a man who had attacked others with a knife.”
According to police, the suspect, who is unhoused, saw his sister with a group of people at the farmers’ market and thought someone in the group was acting inappropriately towards her.
The suspect attacked the person with a makeshift machete. The victim was a Jehovah’s Witness who attended the market regularly as part of their outreach.
Police said the victim and the suspect’s sister both said nothing inappropriate had taken place. The victim was injured on the face and was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.
Police arrested the suspect.
“Thanks to the quick action of citizens who intervened, the situation was contained before it could escalate further in the busy market,” said Tulsa Police. “We appreciate the community’s assistance in holding the suspect until we could take over.”
Organizers said that while this incident seemed to be isolated, Tulsa Police said they will now have an officer on site during Saturday markets moving forward.
“We are incredibly grateful to the customers, farmers, volunteers, and market staff who responded so quickly — helping detain the perpetrator and care for the injured individual until first responders and TPD arrived,” said Tulsa Farmers’ Market. “Y’all are heroes!”
