Tahlequah Police Department recommends termination of assistant chief

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The Tahlequah Police Department leadership team has recommended the termination of its Assistant Chief Dexter Scott to city council following an off-duty incident.

Chief of Police Nate King was notified on May 24 that Assistant Chief Scott may have been involved in a criminal incident at Burnt Cabin Marina on Lake Tenkiller that took place on May 22.

Chief King gathered information, met with the victim of the incident and reviewed surveillance video.

After reviewing, Chief King believed an official internal investigation was warranted.

Police said Chief King met with City officials and Assistant Chief Scott was placed on administrative leave on May 28.

The leadership team includes Chief King, Assistant Chief Scott, who did not participate due to being the subject of the investigation, Captain Arnall, Captain Randy Tanner and Lieutenants Bryan Qualls, Justin Leatherwood, Matt Frits, Elden Graves and Josh Girdner.

Police said the leadership team gathered on June 10 to review the investigation’s findings along with City officials.

It was found that Assistant Chief Scott violated multiple police department and City policies.

The leadership team is now recommending that the Tahlequah City Council terminate the employment of Assistant Chief Scott.

Assistant Chief Scott was notified of the finding and recommendation on June 12. City council has not yet met regarding the issue.
