PAYNE COUNTY, Okla. — A Payne County judge has ruled to convene a grand jury after petitioners acquired enough signatures to request an investigation into the office of the Payne County District Attorney.

According to court records, petitioners acquired 2,452 signatures which is nearly three times the needed 828 signatures.

The request for a grand jury follows after a judge ruled in April that the victims’ rights were not violated in the case against Jesse Butler. He was previously charged with several counts including first-degree rape, domestic assault and battery by strangulation and sexual battery.

Butler was reclassified as a Youthful Offender and sentenced to supervision over imprisonment following a plea agreement.
