The City of Broken Arrow was informed by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) last week that it had opened an investigation into the city’s zoning and land use practices.
The focus of the investigation is on how the city’s zoning laws treat religious land use, including the rezoning request for the development of a mosque in south Broken Arrow.
The City says they are fully engaged with the DOJ in its investigation.
The City Council plans to meet on August 3rd at 5:30 p.m. to discuss this investigation in executive session as authorized by state law.
Executive session is not open to the public.
The Broken Arrow City Council denied the zoning request for a new mosque in January, saying the project would have required extensive grading and infrastructure work directly within the flood plain.
The Islamic Society of Tulsa said at the time that they planned to pursue all options to challenge the denial.
