SAPULPA — Sapulpa is currently celebrating the 100th anniversary of Route 66, and there is now a new sign commemorating its ties to the Mother Road.
Thanks to a grant from the Route 66 Commission, the sign sits in front of City Hall. The commission’s chairman, Thomas Tillison, tells KRMG there were over 40 signs given to individual cities along Route 66, and each was specific to that community.
The signs symbolize each town’s connection to the road, and they’re perfect for selfies.
“Not only do they see where you’re at, they get to see what’s relative to that community — what the community says who they are,” Tillson said.
The Sapulpa sign is a colorful six-foot-tall Route 66 sign with pictures of the Tee Pee Drive-in, the bronze Buffalo, the 60-foot gas pump, and the bridge.
“Along Route 66 in Oklahoma is all about community, and it’s all about community involvement,” Tillison said.
