OWASSO — Owasso Police are investigating an attempted fraud that has gone viral on social media.
With comments like “Church Lady?” and “That’s Mama from Mama’s House,” the Owasso Police Department’s post about someone attempting to commit fraud at a bank was shared nearly 800 times on Facebook.
On Thursday, Aug. 13, Owasso Police were called out to the First Bank of Owasso for a potential fraud case, where an individual dressed as an elderly woman, complete with large clothing, oversized glasses, and a bad wig, attempted to withdraw money from someone else’s account. It appeared as if the suspect attempted to make themselves look older.
Police said bank management told them the suspect used fake identification cards with the victim’s information, but the suspect left before any money was withdrawn.
Owasso PD’s Nick Boatman told KRMG that a teller at a different location assisted the actual customer earlier in the day. Then, that teller was moved to the location where the disguised suspect attempted to withdraw money. The teller recognized the name, and the suspect was not the actual customer. Police said the teller attempted to stall, but the suspect grabbed the identification and left the bank before officers arrived.
“So, unfortunately, yes, there are tons of frauds. You don’t see a lot of them to this measure of disguise, but it does happen,” Boatman said.
The victim told officers she did not know the suspect’s identity.
