OKLAHOMA — A driver was arrested after an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper found an active pipe bomb in a vehicle during a traffic stop.

OHP said the trooper conducted the traffic stop because the driver was following another vehicle too closely.

After speaking with the driver, the trooper developed probable cause to search the vehicle and found several concerning items including an active pipe bomb, smokeless power, a bag of potassium nitrate and a detonator cord.

The trooper also found a rifle with multiple magazines of ammunition, and the driver was armed with a pistol.

OHP said the driver was arrested on multiple charges, including possessing an explosive device and possessing a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The incident remains under investigation and OHP said details are intentionally limited at this time. However, the incident serves as a reminder that a routine traffic stop can quickly develop into a criminal interdiction encounter.
OHP said its troopers are trained and prepared to recognize and safely handle these types of situations.
