A local briefing held in Tulsa shared more information about a nuclear lifecycle innovation campus that may be coming to Oklahoma.
In July, the federal Department of Energy named Oklahoma as one of the six finalists for the nuclear campus.
At Wednesday’s briefing, officials explained that the campus would consist of three nodes: reactor deployment and isotope production, enrichment through recycling and used nuclear fuel management.
Oklahoma Secretary of Energy and Environment Jeff Starling said multiple communities in the state have come forward expressing interest in hosting the campus.
“I think people understand that this is an economic opportunity that is not only for them and their children, but for them, their children, their grandchildren, their great grandchildren,” said Starling. “The investment in nuclear is not something that will be gone after 10 years. It will be here generation after generation after generation. That’s just the nature of how nuclear works.”
Starling said the project would bring around 25,000 jobs, along with research opportunities for Oklahoma universities.
Three states are anticipated to be selected by the end of the year.
