CHOUTEAU, Okla. — Chouteau leaders are attempting to reassure residents that help will be there if they need it.
We reported that the Fire Chief and several members of the volunteer fire department turned in their resignations Tuesday night. The town board held an emergency meeting on Wednesday.
The board formally accepted the resignation which initially left about five people to respond to fires, however at yesterday’s meeting the board introduced new hires and gave people in the community the chance to talk with a possible fire chief.
“My heart and soul has always been for the town and the people of this town.” says Kirk Kvittum, who was appointed Interim Fire Chief for Chouteau. “I’m also a member of Mayes County Emergency Management. I’ve done that since 2007. So I’ve been around.”
Kvittum says what drives him is that he doesn’t want to see a lack of assistance for the people. He said several people that were hired at the meeting have served as EMTs, EMRs, and have firefighter experience.
Kvittum start date as the interim fire chief begins November 1.
“Trucks will roll with qualified employees.” says Kvittum. “So when you pick up the phone and call 911, there is a truck coming and I can guarantee you that.”
