While public school enrollment in Oklahoma is down, an online school says its enrollment is up.

The flexibility of online classes can be alluring to students with other things going on in their lives.

“These students come to us for reasons. They are behind on credit. They have personal or academic reasons where schooling has not been a priority. They are taking care of their family. They are taking care of their own kids. So they come to us to help get them back on track,” said Jennifer Pace, the Executive Director of Insight School of Oklahoma.

Pace says a lot of their students have other commitments and they’re looking at alternative education routes.

“The majority of our students will not go on to higher education. A lot of them, we are getting career workforce ready. They’ll just go straight to work after that. A lot of them will go to maybe tech schools. We have some that will join the military,” said Pace.

Insight School of Oklahoma is a free online public school for people in Oklahoma. Pace says enrollment has grown by more than 85% since the 2022-2023 school year.

“A lot of our students have special circumstances in life. Maybe they have a medical condition. Maybe they are taking care of a grandparent. Maybe they have to work to help their family make ends meet,” said Emma Avery, an English teacher with Insight School of Oklahoma.

Avery says several students come to them because they want to drop out of high school altogether.

“What a lot of students don’t realize is that when they get their GED it does not come with the same privileges as a high school diploma in the work force,” said Avery.

Avery says one goal is to really work with those students to get them across the finish line.
