OWASSO, Okla. — Owasso Public Schools has been accepted for a fellowship with the News Literacy Project to teach students on how to find credible information.
The three-year fellowship comes with a $30,000 grant and support to place news literacy education districtwide.
“AI, social media and algorithms are reshaping how we consume news. Teaching our students to think critically is necessary for civic education,” said Melinda Gallagher, the library media specialist at Owasso High School. “This fellowship with the News Literacy Project allows us to equip our students with the tools they need to be informed and empowered citizens in the digital age.”
Gallagher will also be the one who leads the initiative for the district.
“With news literacy skills, our students will be prepared to navigate an increasingly complex information landscape with confidence and discernment,” Gallagher said.
Owasso joins Norman Public schools, which was accepted to the fellowship in 2024.
The News Literacy Project’s District Fellowship program is a part of 44 districts across 16 states.
