A suspected drunk driver knocked out power to nearly the entire town of Sperry early Monday morning, forcing Sperry Public Schools to close for the day.
Police say the crash happened just before 4:30 a.m. at Cincinnati and Main, when a man going nearly twice the speed limit failed to make a turn and slammed into a utility pole. The driver reportedly admitted to doing about 40 mph in a 25 mph zone.
The downed pole cut electricity to most of the town. The outage even trapped fire crews inside their station because the garage doors wouldn’t open, but firefighters still responded using their personal vehicles.
