The Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, OHP’s parent agency, issued a statement on Schroyer being tapped for ICE and on his storied career as a trooper.

The Oklahoma Department of Public Safety is pleased to see retired Major Lance Schroyer, whom President Donald Trump has nominated to serve as Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), for this position. Lance’s dedication to public service and law enforcement has been evident throughout his career, and we congratulate him on this nomination.

Schroyer began serving the people of Oklahoma as an Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper on June 30, 2000. Over the course of a distinguished 26-year career, he served in a variety of assignments and leadership positions, ultimately retiring on May 9, 2026, with the rank of Major.

Throughout his career, Schroyer gained extensive experience in criminal interdiction and large-scale law enforcement operations. He was instrumental in implementing the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s 287(g) program and strengthening the agency’s partnership with ICE. Through that work, he witnessed firsthand the value of cooperation between local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in addressing public safety concerns. He also helped lead numerous successful commercial motor vehicle enforcement initiatives focused on identifying criminal activity and enhancing roadway safety.

Oklahoma Department of Public Safety Commissioner Tim Tipton said, “I am grateful for Lance’s years of dedicated service to the State of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, and for his friendship. Throughout his career, Lance demonstrated strong character, steady leadership, and a deep desire to protect others while serving the public. His experience and understanding of the critical role ICE plays in protecting our communities have prepared him well for this opportunity. If confirmed, I am confident his leadership, law enforcement experience, and dedication to public service will be a tremendous benefit to our nation. I wish him continued success in this next chapter of his service to our country.”
