City leaders and residents gathered at Broken Arrow’s Veterans Park Tuesday evening to bury a time capsule as part of the city’s celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The time capsule includes several metal canisters in which each city department and each city councilor placed items of their choosing.

“The items placed in this capsule represent who we are today, but they are also a reflection, even more importantly, our hope for tomorrow,” City Manager Michael Spurgeon said. “We hope that 25 years from now, Broken Arrow continues to be a community known for its character, its compassion, and its commitment to future generations.”

Spurgeon left a message for the future Broken Arrowans.

“To those that open this one day, we send you our very best wishes. We hope you inherit a city that is even more stronger [sic] and more vibrant and more united than the one that we have today,” Spurgeon said.

BA Mayor Debra Wimpee included a letter to the future mayor. She read part of that letter during Tuesday’s ceremony.

“If Broken Arrow has continued to flourish, it is because generations before us sacrificed, invested, and cared enough to leave something better for those who followed. We simply tried to do the same. Please know that your future mattered to us. We dreamed about the city you would inherit.” Mayor Wimpee said.

The city included some items from KRMG, including audio recordings of our BA Breakdown segment, photos of KRMG in community and a KRMG mic flag.

The capsule will be unearthed in 2051.
