12-year-old loses hand in fireworks accident

TULSA, Okla. — A 12-year-old boy lost a hand following an accident involving a grenade-like mortar firework, according to the Tulsa Police Department.

The accident happened July 1 around 10:20 p.m. near 46th Street North and Main.

The 11-year-old suffered injuries throughout his upper body, while the 12-year-old is reported to have suffered significant trauma to his eyes as well as his hand being “largely destroyed,” according to TPD.

Both children were taken to the hospital, but the 12-year-old has since been transported to a hospital in Oklahoma City for further treatment.

TPD is urging parents to use caution and remain vigilant with their children in order to prevent injuries.

The lead-up to the accident is still under investigation.
