TULSA, Okla. — A 12-year-old boy lost a hand following an accident involving a grenade-like mortar firework, according to the Tulsa Police Department.
The accident happened July 1 around 10:20 p.m. near 46th Street North and Main.
Another child, an 11-year-old, was also injured. Both children were being treated by paramedics when TPD officers arrived.
The 11-year-old suffered injuries throughout his upper body, while the 12-year-old is reported to have suffered significant trauma to his eyes as well as his hand being “largely destroyed,” according to TPD.
TPD is urging parents to use caution and remain vigilant with their children in order to prevent injuries.
Officials said fireworks are “essentially bombs that can cause serious injury or death if not treated with respect.”
The lead-up to the accident is still under investigation.
