OKLAHOMA — The Grand River Dam Authority (GRDA) is sharing safety tips for floating down the Illinois River ahead of the Fourth of July weekend.

“We encourage everyone to take advantage of this beautiful waterway and come visit over the July 4 weekend,” said Justin Alberty with the GRDA. “But as you do, keep in mind that enjoyable outings on the water always start with floating safe, smart and sober.”

Listed below are the things you should do on your next floating trip:

  • Wear a lifejacket! It’s one of the easiest ways to remain safe on the water. All children ages 12 or under are legally required to wear a life jacket when floating on the river
  • Let the commercial float operator know if anyone in your party is a first time or novice floater. This way, individuals with less experience can be paired with experienced paddlers and floaters, along with potentially being placed in a raft with less of a chance for capsizing.
  • Respect the weather and water conditions. If you get tired while floating, take a moment to rest on the bank or on a gravel bar.
  • Prepare for the weather by wearing sunscreen and a hat. Make sure to always stay hydrated.
  • Camp only in designated areas

Listed below are the things you should NOT do on your next float trip:

  • DON’T dive into the river from an elevated area like bridges, bluffs, stream banks and trees.
  • DON’T swim or float alone. Always float within sight of someone else.
  • DON’T take anything that could be lost in the river. It’s best to check car keys and other personal belongings with the commercial float operator for safekeeping.
