SANTA FE, N.M. — Police arrested an Inola man who investigators say shot at two officers in Santa Fe, New Mexico, which led to a standoff.
According to reports, Santa Fe Police responded to a Motel 6 in reference to several reports of shots being fired from the second floor of the motel. When they arrived, two officers were directed to the room by the staff and were given a master key. The officers found the door to have several bullet holes in it. They attempted to make contact with the occupant by knocking on the door and identifying themselves as police officers. They tried to use the master key, but the door remained locked.
After officers attempted to force entry, they were shot at from inside the room. Police say no officers were injured by the gunfire.
Officers immediately evacuated the occupied room in the area as additional resources responded. They began announcements on their public address system to have the suspect surrender with no response at first. Officers then got the phone number for the suspect and attempted to speak with him over the phone. He refused to come out and told officers to leave him alone. Officers later obtained a search warrant for the room and an arrest warrant for the suspect.
SWAT and other additional units were called to the scene, and after several hours, they breached the unit. The suspect exited onto the second-floor catwalk, and after a brief struggle, he was taken into custody. A search of the suspect revealed a handgun. No victims or others were located inside the room.
The suspect was booked into the Santa Fe County Detention Center and charged with two counts of aggravated assault against a peace officer, criminal damage to property over $1,000, and negligent use of a deadly weapon.
