BA city council approves residential development despite flood concerns

By Paris Rain, FOX23.com News Staff

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — The Broken Arrow City Council approved a new residential development despite concerns from people in the area over potential flooding.

The development is called Spring Creek and is planned to be in the area near 121st and Lynn Lane.

The city council was told by developers and city officials that the guidelines needed for the final conditional plat are being met and while some neighbors are having flood issues, they said it has nothing to do with the plat approval.

Residents gathered at Broken Arrow City Hall to share their concerns with city councilors and to hear from developers on what can be done about the planned development.

Spring Creek Crossing is set to be a single-family residential area that will have 132 lots. While the development is meant to help with BA’ s growth, neighbors nearby are suffering from flooding and damage to their backyards due to how the plat sits.

“I’ve experienced splitting in my storage garage,” said one Broken Arrow resident. “…My driveway [has] already experienced flooding that we’ve never seen before and half of the reason why isn’t because when they came in, they raised the elevation — which is mind-blowing to me. So that’s what’s increased the water flow coming in. We’re here tonight to show the evidence of what has occurred…”

One neighbor said if they don’t resolve the drainage issues now, it could become more expensive for everyone.

After the council heard from neighbors and the developers, they chose to approve the final plat.

Developers said now, they are currently in the middle of a legal situation and won’t be able to build anything until it is resolved but they did give the city its word to work with them if needed and to meet with residents to fix the situation as best as they can.

They said they will report back in 30 days with an update.
