New Tulsa addiction treatment center discusses importance of accessible local treatment

TULSA, Okla. — The Haven Detox – Oklahoma, a new addiction treatment center about to open in Tulsa, discussed the importance of having accessible local treatment for those seeking recovery from addiction.

“This facility right here, it’s important because there are so many people out there that are trying to get help but don’t necessarily have access to it,” explained Titus Carey, a business representative for The Haven Detox. “When somebody reaches out for help, we need to get them into treatment or into detox quickly because there’s a limited window there that people will actually respond to help.”

Unfortunately, waitlists to get into a detox facility can be incredibly long.

“In Oklahoma, there’s been such a huge need with some of the changes in insurance and stuff where people can’t leave the state anymore, so they have to stay here in Oklahoma. When that happened a couple of years ago, that created a huge shortage for…commercial insurance beds for people to be able to get treatment. With that shortage, it created a waitlist. Whenever we have a waitlist, people are stuck out there and a lot of times they don’t make it. This is important for Tulsa and for this community so that they can have easy access to getting a treatment when they’re ready to go.”

Carey said it’s recommended to detox at a facility instead of at home.

“It’s difficult to help yourself at home, try to detox at home, because you have easy access to whatever you want. There’s no accountability there. Whenever you come into a facility like this, you’re kind of in a little bubble of safety. You come in here, you learn the tools that you need to be able to stay sober and whenever you have triggers or when you have the urge to use, then you learn the tools that are necessary for you to overcome those.”

Another vital component a treatment facility provides is a strong sense of community.

“In recovery, you’ve got to have that community piece. Community is extremely important when you’re going for long term recovery because without that, we see so many people that relapse.”

Carey said the goal of their facility is to help people realize they’re not alone and that recovery is possible for everyone.

“The most important thing when somebody is reaching out for help is for them to feel like they’re not alone. From personal experience myself, I didn’t think that anybody understood what I was going through and so I didn’t think that anybody would understand. When I finally reached out for help, somebody on the other line was like, ‘hey, I know how you feel. I’ve been there before and I can absolutely help you.’ I believed them and I took that help. [It’s] critically important that we do that ourselves here, that we let people have access to us and be able to call us any time, day or night, and reach out to us and that way we can answer the phone and help them navigate what their recovery will start looking like.”

The Haven Detox – Oklahoma will begin accepting patients on Feb. 9.

On Feb. 5, a ribbon cutting will be held at the facility located at 2130 South 85th East Avenue in Tulsa at 11:00 a.m.
