JENKS — After several walkouts by area high schools this week, Jenks students got in on the action, marching in the downtown area to protest against U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement and the Trump administration.
Students from Jenks High School walked out of class and left campus to march up and down Main Street, chanting and holding signs. Some waved the Mexican flag as they marched to festive music. A few signs had vulgar language, and another student was holding up two middle fingers to media.
Danny, a Jenks student, tells KRMG, ICE isn’t welcome in Oklahoma, and he’s marching for his parents.
“We want ICE out. Nobody wants ICE here in our state, and we want to the get the word out that we don’t want them here… My parents came here to give me a better life, and now I want to fight for their lives,” he said.
He said the Jenks administrators did not sanction the walkout and encouraged the students to stay in class.
“The school didn’t allow us (to walkout). There are principals outside. They don’t want us to do this. They would like us to have a normal school day,” Danny said.
Danny also said some of the students might join a walkout at East Central this afternoon.
