TULSA, Okla. — Four TPS elementary schools improved their Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) report card grades, allowing them to move off the schools on the department’s “need improvement” list.
Kerr Elementary, Marshall Elementary, Mitchell Elementary and Wayman Tisdale Fine Arts Academy have officially been removed from Comprehensive Support and Improvement designation status by the OSDE.
“We are thrilled to see the hard work of our students and the dedication of our educators at these four schools,” said TPS Superintendent Dr. Ebony Johnson. “The focus and determination of our schools and district leaders puts academic growth at the forefront of our daily work—and it is working. As the state’s largest school district, we are committed to accelerating student achievement. Tulsa Public Schools is truly a district on the rise.”
The criteria designating a school as needing Support and Improvement are outlined in Oklahoma’s Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
If a school or certain subgroups at the school underperform by ranking in the lowest 5% compared to other schools across the state, they’re identified as needing additional support by OSDE.
Once the schools show improvement in student grades and milestones, the OSDE will remove them from the list of schools needing improvement.
According to TPS, the district has halved the number of schools given an F rating by the OSDE over the past three years.
