Bixby students leave campus to protest ICE, Trump administration

BIXBY — Area high schools have been staging walkouts to protest ICE and the Trump Administration, and today it was Bixby’s turn.

Around 50 students from Bixby High School left campus today and marched down Memorial to a Walgreens to protest with signs. They chanted “ICE OUT NOW!” and some signs read “No one is illegal on stolen land.”

Students were also dancing and cheering when cars would honk their horns.

Andy Ramirez, a Bixby sophomore, said he doesn’t want families to be separated. He said his mother, cousins, and uncles are from a foreign country, and they work hard, but there is fear of deportation.

“My little sister is scared (that) my mom will get deported, and I said, ‘Don’t be scared of anything.'” Ramirez said. “We come out here, we’re just spreading the peaceful word, knowing if you’re letting other families stay together, you should let us people, all Latinos, arabs, Africans, no matter what color they are, no matter what religion they support, they should stay with their families.”

Ramirez was walking down the street, yelling at cars, “My mother works harder than you do.”

Bixby police and fire were at the protest to ensure the students’ safety.
