City of Tulsa assisting with recovery following March 6 tornado

By Fox23.com News Staff

TULSA, Okla. — The City of Tulsa said it’s assisting residents with recovery efforts following the EF-1 tornado that hit the north Tulsa area on March 6.

According to the City, the damage zone for the tornado was determined to be within East 54th Street to the north, the northernmost portion of the Gilcrease Expressway to the south, North Lewis Avenue to the east and North Hartford Avenue to the west.

You can view a map of the damage zone below:

Residents living within the damage zone are eligible to receive a specialized greenwaste collection service from the City.

The City said all greenwaste must be separated from household trash and storm debris. Tree stumps, roofing materials and other trash aren’t eligible for greenwaste pick-up.

The greenwaste pick-up must be placed on the curb about four feet away from other objects. Everything must be cut into five-foot lengths or shorter.

To schedule a greenwaste pick-up, you can:

  • Call 311 during regular business hours.
  • Email tulsa311@cityoftulsa.org with your name, address and other important details.
  • Visit Tulsa 311 here.

Residents living in the damage zone are also eligible for one free storm debris dump pass.

To request a pass, residents are asked to reach out to 311.

After reaching out, a City representative will visit the property and verify the debris, such as roofing materials or fencing, was directly caused by storm damage.

Once approved, residents must deliver the debris to the specified location on their dump pass or given to them by 311.

All households are only eligible for one free greenwaste pick-up and one storm debris dump pass.

Households with storm damage that meet the income criteria may qualify for an emergency repair grant.

The City explained, “Eligible repairs include items that may pose an immediate threat to the health and safety of the occupants, such as items related to electrical, security (doors and windows), roofs and heating This is a grant program and is not required to be repaid.”

Those interested in the program are asked to email housing@cityoftulsa.org for more information.

Some Tulsans are also eligible to receive free financial counseling with the Tulsa Financial Empowerment Center about how to manage the costs of storm damage recovery and how to navigate the paperwork associated with various assistance programs.
