Hundreds of axe throwers from around the world invaded Tulsa this week for the axe-throwing championships.
Generally known for hockey and ice skating, the WeStreet Ice Center is hosting “The Axe and Knife Throwing World Championship.”
Around 400 competitors are expected to participate, with athletes traveling from across the United States and internationally. Local athletes from Tulsa and Claremore are expected to compete, as well.
At the ice center, spectators will be able to watch competitors across more than 20 throwing lanes. Crews had to work tirelessly to prepare the area for axe-throwing. To create a stable foundation, crews laid a special protective surface over the ice, similar to materials used during concerts at large arenas. The competitions started on Wednesday and end on Sunday.
