TULSA, Okla. — A Tulsa County sheriff’s deputy has been fired and arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge following an incident at the Tulsa County jail on Sunday, authorities said.

The Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office said Deputy Andrew Etcheverry was assisting detention officers with an inmate who reportedly bit him on the hand. Investigators say Etcheverry then punched the handcuffed inmate multiple times in response.

In a statement, the sheriff’s office said, “This response is not consistent with Etcheverry’s training or the standards that the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office expects from our staff in the treatment of individuals in our custody.”

Etcheverry was suspended without pay during an internal affairs review and criminal investigation. After reviewing the case, the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office filed a misdemeanor charge, resulting in his termination and arrest.

He was hired as a detention officer in August 2023 and promoted to deputy in July 2024.
