TULSA, Okla. — Starting on Monday, Tulsa drivers may notice some construction along the Broken Arrow Expressway between East 15th Street and South Sheridan Road.

The City of Tulsa is beginning its multi-week project of installing new, smart highway lighting along the highway. This will repair the 118 existing light poles and convert them to energy-efficient LEDs.

These upgrades will also include the installation of smart devices that will allow the city to monitor real-time lighting status.

The LED fixtures are meant to provide brighter, energy-efficient lighting while helping to lower long-term maintenance costs.

The city said highway lighting has been one of its most challenging maintenance areas.

“In many cases, a single damaged pole, electrical issues, or traffic collision can impact sections of lighting infrastructure and cause dozens of lights to go dark at once,” said the city. “Theft and vandalism have also created ongoing challenges over the years, particularly involving wiring and electrical components.”

Crews will begin working on the eastbound lanes, with the inner lanes closing near East 15th Street. They will move onto the westbound lanes once this section is finished and close the inner lanes near South Sheridan Road.

As work progresses, crews will move toward East 21st Street.

These lane closures will happen on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drivers are asked to be cautious, slow down, and stay alert in work zones.

The project is expected to be completed within a month if the weather permits.
