A man is dead after Tulsa Police shot him in a pond near 36th St. N. and Hartford Avenue.

Tulsa Police say Mitchell D. Folsom was shot and killed after he fled a vehicle crash and hid in a pond. Tulsa Police Captain Richard Meulenberg tells KRMG that it all started with an argument and a shooting. Folsom and a woman were arguing inside a vehicle when he pulled a gun and shot through the car’s window, reports said. The woman began driving erratically, on the road and off, and soon crashed into another vehicle. Police say Folsom then pointed the gun at the driver of the vehicle and fled on foot, headed towards Walt Whitman Elementary School.

The driver told police that when Folsom pulled the gun, he said he was not going back to jail. The school was placed on lockdown while officers searched for the suspect.

Police say Folsom then ran into a wooded area, ran past Walt Whitman Elementary School, and ended up near Flat Rock Creek.

According to police, the suspect made movements that officers reacted to, and Folsom was shot. He then went into the water and did not resurface.

Officers backed off, and it soon became a recovery effort. They eventually found his body.

Investigators are still searching the creek for the gun.
