OWASSO, Okla. — The City of Owasso said the evacuation order for the Cornerstone Shopping Center has been lifted and businesses are allowed to reopen.
An evacuation order was issued on June 18, following what investigators determined was an underground methane gas leak from an unknown source.
The City said that since the evacuation order was issued, the Owasso Fire Department has worked closely with Oklahoma Natural Gas and the Oklahoma Corporation Commission to monitor atmospheric conditions at the property and has installed a methane gas venting system.
Following the installation of the venting system, the City said no hazardous concentrations were detected in exterior locations, test holes, or inside any of the businesses.
The City of Owasso shared the following statement in part:
“Based on the successful operation of the venting system and continued monitoring results, authorities have determined that the safety hazard that prompted the evacuation no longer exists.
We appreciate the patience and cooperation of the business owners, employees, and the community throughout this incident. Please rally behind these valued members of our city and support them as they get back to business!”
