LEFLORE COUNTY, Okla. — The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place on Sunday in LeFlore County.
According to OSBI, the LeFlore County Sheriff’s Office, Wister Police Department, and the United States Forestry Department responded to a welfare check around 11 a.m. on Sunday at a home near U.S. Highway 270.
Once on scene, OSBI said someone fired at law enforcement. The shooter was identified as 36-year-old Edgar Lara.
Lara barricaded himself inside of his home, leading to a stand-off between him and the responding agencies.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol and several additional agencies aided in the response.
During the situation, a LeFlore County deputy and an officer with Wister Police were injured. The officer was taken to the hospital to be treated and has been reported to be in stable condition.
OSBI confirmed that the LeFlore County deputy was pronounced dead.
Around 4 p.m., Lara surrendered and was taken into custody following treatment for minor injuries. He was booked into the LeFlore County jail.
Several law enforcement, state, and local agencies have expressed their condolences for the LeFlore County deputy who passed away.
Glenpool Police Department shared the following statement on Facebook:
“Our hearts are with our brothers and sisters at the LeFlore County Sheriff’s Office, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, and the Wister Police Department following today’s heartbreaking incident.
“We grieve alongside the loved ones, friends, and colleagues of the deputy who gave his life serving others. We are also thinking of the injured officer and wishing them strength and a full recovery in the days ahead.
“Moments like this remind us of the reality behind the badge, the sacrifice, the risk, and the commitment to protect others no matter the cost.
“Please keep everyone affected in your thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.”
The Oklahoma Department of Corrections said its “…thoughts and prayers are with the LeFlore County Sheriff’s Office and the Wister Police Department during this difficult time.” In a post shared to social media, the agency said it “…[stands] with all [its] law enforcement partners.”
Other agencies that extended their condolences include the Eufaula Police Department, the Atoka County Sheriff’s Office, Country Corner Fire & EMS, the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, and many more.
OSBI said this is an active investigation.
