City of Glenpool gives first look at new wastewater treatment facility

GLENPOOL, Okla. — The City of Glenpool is giving the public a behind-the-scenes look at one of its largest infrastructure projects to date.

A nearly $60 million wastewater treatment facility designed to support the city’s long-term growth.

On Wednesday, city leaders welcomed members of the American Society of Civil Engineers Tulsa Branch for a walkthrough tour of the new facility, which is currently under construction.

City officials say the project is about 60 percent complete after officially breaking ground in early 2025.

“This plant is designed to handle three million gallons per day treatment,” said City of Glenpool’s Chief Operations Officer David Agbetunsin.

The new facility marks a major shift from the city’s current aerated lagoon wastewater system to a Sequencing Batch Reactor, or SBR, mechanical treatment plant.

“Some of the facilities are up already; we have the SBR right behind me, which is one of the main technologies of this treatment job,” Agbetunsin said.

The upgraded facility will include several new components, including:

  • New headworks
  • Sequencing Batch Reactor Technology
  • A new digester facility
  • Dewatering buildings
  • UV disinfection systems
  • Maintenance buildings
  • A new administrative building
City leaders also addressed concerns residents have raised over odors from previous wastewater treatment operations.

“We are optimistic that the smell will improve.

As a part of this piece, we have a deodorizer with this technology,” Agbetunsin said.

Officials say the federally funded project has progressed smoothly so far, thanks to strong collaboration between contractors, engineers, and city staff.

Members of the American Society of Civil Engineers toured the site on Wednesday and praised the scale and importance of the investment.

“We walked through the site and it was just a beautiful tread mark to see what we are doing with the infrastructure around here and kudos to them.

It looks like a wonderful project,” Vice President of ASCE Tulsa Brogan Tyler said.

Tyler said projects like Glenpool’s wastewater facility are critical as communities across Oklahoma continue to grow and infrastructure demands increase.

“We recognize that this is an investment that we continue to have locally as an ASCE chapter.

We have been working on an infrastructure report card to come out later this year, early next, and we focus on these things, such as funding and infrastructure,” Tyler said.

City leaders expect the wastewater treatment facility to be completed by spring 2027.
