STILLWATER, Okla – Former Oklahoma State football coach Bob Simmons has died at the age of 77.
Simmons made history as the Cowboys’ first Black head football coach, leading OSU from 1995 to 2000 and compiling a 30-38 record.
He guided the Cowboys to an 8-4 season, an Alamo Bowl appearance, and Big 12 Coach of the Year honors in 1997, while ending a long Bedlam drought with three wins over rival Oklahoma.
Simmons is credited with helping lay the foundation for Oklahoma State’s rise into a national football power and coached future stars including Rashaun Woods, Tatum Bell, and Kevin Williams.
Before arriving in Stillwater, Simmons was part of Colorado’s 1990 national championship staff and spent more than 30 years coaching at the college and high school levels.
