The Inola Toen Council approved a 60-day moratorium on the proposed aluminum smelter at Monday’s meeting.
It was a packed house as residents piled in to voice their opinions on the $4 billion project. Many who live in the area are opposed to the proposed smelter.
Inola leaders said the 60-day pause will more time to review their options and potential impacts of the plant.
The smelter has the strong support of President Donald Trump and Governor Kevin Stitt.
Gov. Stitt said in a social media post on Monday that, in his view, Oklahoma cannot let the plant end up in another state.
“Here’s the truth – President Trump said that if Oklahoma walks away, 20 other states are ready to take this project. They will take the jobs, the investment, the stronger domestic supply chain, and the long-term economic growth that should belong to Oklahoma families,” Stitt said.
Stitt added that the plant would bring jobs and be a big economic boost to the state.
