Oklahoma considered for new kind of nuclear power site

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Oklahoma is one of 5 states the U.S. government is considering for a new kind of nuclear power station.

The Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus, as its being called by the Department of Energy, wouldn’t just be a nuclear power plant.

The Department of Energy says it would also fabricate and enrich the nuclear fuel, recycle nuclear fuel, and also be the eventual repository for the nuclear waste.

As envisioned by the DOE, the campuses could also host advanced manufacturing and data centers.

DOE officials say the campus has the potential to create $10 billion dollars in state and local tax revenue for Oklahoma and create 25,000 jobs.

The DOE hopes to bring the first campuses online as soon as 2027, but some critics say technological and funding hurdles could make that goal unrealistic.

Idaho, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Utah have also been selected as possible host sites for the campuses.
