TULSA, Okla. — University of Tulsa opened a new nursing sim lab on campus this semester.
Students used to have to travel downtown to do their lab, now they can stay on campus, and they tell me it’s boosting community and moral.
“It used to feel like nursing was separate from the university experience. Now its all combined into a great team experience. We really enjoyed that this semester,” said Will Buron.
Will Buron is a junior nursing major at TU. He says having the lab on campus means they can get to more classes, use their meal plan, and get to talk to professors more.
“After being in the hospital for a few semesters now as a junior nursing student, I can tell its more realistic and more adaptable for our climate,” said Buron.
“Our Oxley Campus had more geared toward our undergrad program and since they renewed this spot on camps they added more of the devices and mannequins that could help for the learning for grad programs and I think that’s a good addition to it,” said D’sousa.
Rhiannon Sullivan is the simulation coordinator at TU. She explained their new lab is set up to be more realistic to what a hospital or clinic would feel like. They have skills beds, specialized simulation rooms, an operating room for anesthesia, and a clinic room.
“The lighting is better here. We were able to make some changes to the simulation rooms when we got here because we got to think about what was working for us downtown and what we could do better,” said Sullivan.
Sullivan said they have had growth in their nursing program and their class size this year is much larger than last years. She hopes seeing the nursing students on campus will encourage more students to check out the program.
