TULSA — With thousands of visitors expected in Tulsa for Route 66 Centennial celebrations, City leaders are taking a closer look at the condition of some of the City’s iconic Route 66 landmarks.

As Tulsa prepares for the Route 66 Centennial, City Councilors say they’re shifting their focus from building new attractions, to taking care of the ones the City already owns.

During Wednesday night’s Public Works Committee meeting, leaders discussed the condition of Route 66 assets across the City including tourism spots, neon signage and other landmarks along the historic corridor.

Councilors say with more visitors expected to come to Tulsa, they want to make sure those spaces aren’t just ready for the celebration, but maintained long after it ends.

The discussion did not result in any final action, but councilors say this is part of a larger conversation about how the City balances tourism growth with long-term maintenance costs.

The committee also talked about the importance of having a clear plan in place before adding more Route 66 projects to the City’s responsibilities.

For now, they say the goal is making sure Tulsa’s Route 66 landmarks are something residents are proud of long after the tourists leave.
