Deadline approaches for Oklahoma voter registration ahead of primary election

TULSA, Okla. — Friday marks the final day for Oklahomans to register ahead of the June primary election, a deadline election officials say is often overlooked, especially by younger voters.

The primary will help determine nominees for several major statewide offices, including governor and U.S. Senate. Voters will also weigh in on a state question that could gradually raise Oklahoma’s minimum wage to $15 by 2029.

Election officials stress that registration must be completed or postmarked by Friday in order to participate in the upcoming election cycle.

The Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy (OICA) says the deadline is part of a larger issue in the state: low voter participation overall.

“Oklahoma has a problem. We have one of the worst turnouts in the United States,” said OICA CEO Joe Dorman. “It’s even worse during the primary.”

Oklahoma’s most recent general election turnout was about 53%, placing the state near the bottom nationally, according to election data cited by the organization.

OICA says one group especially impacted by registration timing rules is young Oklahomans who are turning 18 around election time.

Census-based estimates cited by the group suggest roughly 135 Oklahomans turn 18 each day, meaning more than 3,000 young voters per election cycle could miss their first opportunity to vote if they don’t register before the deadline.

“Too many young people decide they don’t want to vote because it doesn’t matter,” Dorman said. “And then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.”

He says many first-time voters also aren’t aware they can pre-register before turning 18.

“If a young person is going to turn 18 between the May 22 deadline and the primary election and they want to vote, they need to register now,” Dorman said.

Election officials remind residents that registration is not automatic and must be completed in advance of election deadlines.

Applications can be submitted in person, by mail, or through state-approved systems. Voters are also encouraged to verify their registration status ahead of deadlines.

Officials also note that voters should ensure their address and personal information are current before submitting registration materials, as changes made after the deadline may not take effect in time for the primary.

“Young people do need to realize that they can make a difference,” Dorman said. “Just a few motivated, engaged voters can make a difference in local and state elections.”

While advocates say outreach is important, election officials emphasize the mechanics of the process and the importance of understanding deadlines well ahead of Election Day.

“Voters often forget that primaries determine who advances to the general election,” Dorman said. “In many cases in Oklahoma, the elected official is determined by the primary vote.”

Friday’s deadline is the final opportunity for Oklahomans to register ahead of the June primary election. Officials encourage voters to check their registration status and review key deadlines ahead of time.
