TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa Police Department said a man was shot by an officer after he pointed a crossbow at police.
On Friday, the department said several officers went to Union Point Apartments, located near East 41st Street and South 129th East Avenue, to serve both a search and arrest warrant for a 39-year-old suspect wanted on several child sexual abuse charges.
Police said a struggle began when they found the suspect at his apartment.
Authorities said the suspect grabbed a loaded crossbow and pointed it at officers, leading one of the officers at the scene to draw his pistol and fire, hitting the suspect.
Police said the suspect dropped the crossbow and fell to the ground after being shot.
Authorities said the suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment where he underwent surgery.
The department said he’s expected to recover and is under guard at the hospital. They stated he will be booked in the Tulsa County Jail once he’s released.
According to authorities, the case began in April when the 39-year-old was identified as the suspect in a sexual abuse case against a child younger than 10 years old.
During the investigation, the department said its Child Crisis Unit was able to obtain a search warrant and recovered evidence that was ultimately presented to a judge.
Authorities stated the judge then issued an arrest warrant for the suspect for three counts of Lewd Molestation, one count of Child Sexual Exploitation and a count of Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material.
Police said they were attempting to serve that arrest warrant on Friday, which is what led to the shooting.
The department stated they cannot release the suspect’s name while he is in the hospital, but plan to release it once he’s been booked into the Tulsa County Jail.
