TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa Police Department said they’ve arrested two suspects in connection to the deadly shooting that occurred at Hicks Park in east Tulsa.
Around 2:13 a.m. on Monday, officers were called out to Hicks Park after someone called in to report suspicious activity related to a large gathering at the park.
Police said 23-year-old Trevin Corona was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 16-year-old victim, who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Investigators said they later learned the incident began with a party held at the Bowman Event Center located near South Sheridan Road and East 31st Street.
Police said a large group from the initial party eventually moved to Hicks Park.
Authorities said they believe Corona and the 16-year-old victim approached the group and accused them of shooting fireworks in their direction.
Law enforcement said the argument quickly escalated, leading to the fatal shooting.
The department said analysts with its Real-Time Information Center quickly began obtaining and searching through surveillance video at each location.
According to authorities, RTIC analysts were able to locate security video of the shooting and identified both the primary shooter and the getaway car, a black 2023 Chevy Trailblazer.
Using this information, police said they were able to positively identify a 16-year-old suspect as the primary shooter in the surveillance video.
Authorities said they also were able to identify a 20-year-old suspect as the driver of the getaway car.
Police said a detective with the Crime Gun Unit found the 16-year-old’s group at a home near East 91st Place and South 88th East Avenue.
As other authorities were tracking the Cadillac, police stated the Special Operations Team continued with executing its Creek Nation search warrant at the home associated with the 16-year-old suspect.
The department stated the 16-year-old wasn’t in the home during the search, but said authorities found the exact black shirt with white artwork they believe was worn during the shooting.
Later in the evening, the Broken Arrow Police Department, the Warrants Unit and a K9 pulled the Cadillac over for a traffic stop.
Authorities said the 16-year-old suspect was inside the car and attempted to run away from officers but was caught after a short chase.
According to officers, the 20-year-old suspect had already gotten out of the Cadillac before the car was pulled over.
Authorities stated officers with BAPD found the 20-year-old hiding in the backseat of a tan Chevy Impala parked at Aspen Creek Park in Broken Arrow.
Investigators said the 20-year-old had previously texted two acquaintances and asked for them to pick him up at the park.
The department stated both suspects are tribal citizens, meaning their charges are being coordinated with federal and tribal authorities.
At this time, authorities said the 16-year-old suspect has been booked into the Tulsa Juvenile Detention Center and will be facing tribal Muscogee (Creek) Nation charges for First Degree Felony Murder and Shooting with Intent to Kill.
Law enforcement said the 20-year-old suspect has been booked under Muscogee (Creek) Nation jurisdiction for Accessory to Murder in the Second Degree and Possession of a Firearm After Former Conviction of a Felony.
The 20-year-old suspect also has a previous federal conviction for Robbery with a Firearm.
The Tulsa Police Department stated, “This was a very elaborate investigation that was only possible through a massive, coordinated effort. The swift resolution of this violent incident within 24 hours is a direct result of seamless inter-departmental teamwork.”
