After the worst experience of her life, a Tulsa attorney has written a book to help others and herself.
At 19 years old, Rhiannon Thoreson was the victim of a horrific kidnapping and rape that briefly derailed her life three decades ago. She was a student at the University of Tulsa when she was kidnapped from a car wash at knife-point, taken to a remote location, and raped by a man with a long history of sexual assault.
“It’s still something that I’m living with and dealing with and healing from, and I will be until the day I die,” she said.
The man was tried, convicted and sentenced to over 5,000 years in prison, where he eventually died. Thoreson briefly dropped out of college, but went back and earned her law degree. She is now a practicing lawyer in Tulsa, and she helps victims who have gone through similar situations.
After the attack, Thoreson was diagnosed with PTSD and couldn’t find a book to help her cope with what happened. So, she wrote her own book to help others, and to help herself.
“What I was envisioning was the kind of book I wanted back when I was 19 (years old),” she said.
Her book… “My Beauty from Ashes: Enduring the Fire, Becoming the Light,” is set to be released on Oct. 15.
“Yes, I have healed a lot, and I have overcome a lot, and I am doing something because of that now. But that’s not to say I don’t still struggle with it,” Throeson said.
