NOWATA COUNTY, Okla. — The Nowata County Board of County Commissioners have issued a burn ban for the county due to an increased fire danger risk. The ban was issued on Monday morning.

People in Nowata County have been asked to not set fire to any grass or forest, wildlands, bonfires and campfires. They are also asked to not burn trash, debris, or anything that could possibly cause a larger fire.

There are a few exceptions including outdoor cooking and welding. Those who plan to cook outside are asked to do so on a hard, fireproof surface that is at least 10 feet by 10 feet.

Any welding, grinding, or torch work is to be done with a dedicated fire watch person, and there must be a way to extinguish any fire.

The burn ban is expected to last a minimum of 14 days, and if fire danger continues, it may be extended. It can also be removed at any point during the burn ban if conditions change.

Those who do not follow the burn ban can be convicted of a misdemeanor and have to pay a fine of $500, be jailed for no more than a year, or both.
The enforcement of the burn ban is done by any Oklahoma law enforcement office, including local police and the sheriff’s office.
